About
This Website and Awesome App were built with Love and Care as a result of my lived experience having two grandparents struggling with, then passing from, dementia. After I lost my own Grandparents I decided to 'borrow' other grandparents and care for them. I chose to work for seven blessed years in aged and disability care. Often with one-on-one caring roles, there was a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures, and they suffered from different varieties of dementia. Lots of reading and study along the way to find out all that I could about this disease symptom - and here I am. Hopefully I have produced something of value to many. Something that makes a day easier, or a life a little more pleasant, with understanding and support. Welcome all! If you are not interested in the Free or Paid App please join Us here and sign up for our free monthly Newsletter where we will be discussing news, tips, and hopefully a few family stories sent in from subscribers on Dementia, Alzheimer's, Lewy Body and Vascular Dementia, Parkinson's and other similar diseases and symptoms. Memory Photo Books grew out of experiencing how special photos and memories are to the elderly, particularly if they are starting to forget things. Photos help them feel happy as they remember lovely occasions, or people, places or animals. Even workplaces, homes and vehicles can be wonderful memories! It is a precious way to spend time with the elderly men or women- reminiscing over photographs. Photo Books are a valuable resource when people are struggling to remember people and places. When they see the photo they may recall. Often the most recent memories go first and the confusion causes a lot of distress. When old memories stay with them they can feel at ease looking back at old photographs and once again feel like they know what is what. When we are downsizing accommodation there isn't so much room for photo frames or albums. What better way to have photos than on a tablet (stored in the cloud) where they can't get lost, or wet, or fall under a cupboard. When mobility reduces, memory goes and strength fades it is hard to go and find, lift and bring heavy photo albums out so they stay in the cupboard. A free App gives you 5 photos which you can look at and they will roll through on a screensaver on a tablet. It costs us to have the photos stored in the cloud so this is just a gesture so that at least everyone can have some favourite family and friend photos to bring some joy to their day. The paid App provides the possibility to display 300-500 photos in digital, simple to access albums. You can scroll through books or just press one easy button and have the photos run through a slideshow screen saver type mode! There is an option to swap that photo slideshow screensaver over to a dark still calendar that clearly states the day, time of day, the time in a 12 hour format with AM and PM, plus the current weather is displayed on the screen. The Full App also includes a 'Who's Visiting Soon' button and an 'Appointments' button, plus the 'Week Ahead' where you can input information in about upcoming visitors and appointments either in person in the App or via an email link so you can send the information to the App while you are at home!! You can also send photos to the App by an email link and they turn up within minutes, so if you are on holidays, or a new baby arrives, or somebody says "I do" then photos can be sent immediately and be seen almost straight away. There is optional audio to read the wording from the photographs in choices of accents (which unfortunately all sound like an American trying to put on accents lol - maybe improvements will be available soon! But for now PLEASE see the funny side...Haha) There is also the possibility to print the photobooks from the App if you want to (for a small fee).
We write about Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson's-related dementia and mixed dementia. We share caring tips, communication ideas, brain-health information, activities, research summaries and gentle activities like brain games and reminiscence prompts.
The Photobook Calendar App lives at the heart of the site: a tablet-friendly App which stores photos in memory photo books. There is also Photo slideshow mode, and a sensible calendar mode. Like the calendar screens that sell for over $60 each! In the Full App Family and friends can email in (or write in the App directly) upcoming visitors and appointments and there is a week ahead button that shows what is happening over the next 7 days including times. This App reduces stress for everybody. It is designed to be very simple to understand. There is a three stage process to delete anything so there won't be any accidents. We hope to be able to supply a complete tablet with a case, a stand, and the App built in to it already for a fixed price, so a yearly fee isn't charged. The yearly fee is to cover software expenses and for keeping the photos safe in the cloud, so they are accessible on any device that you sign into.
If you are interested in a tablet and the full app complete set for around $290 AUD plus postage, please email me at this address hello@dementiaonline.org and I'll let you know if it is a possibility yet!
